The company was established in 1912 as part of FIAT's lubricant division with the aim of manufacturing "first fill" lubricants for all FIAT vehicles. FL entered the Italian market in 1929 with widespread distribution over the Italian territory.

In 1976 the company became totally independent and autonomously managed.

In 1980 FL started its international expansion with the introduction of the Tutela Lubrificantes company in Brazil and Olio Fiat Española..

This expansion continued with the setting up of branches in France (1987), United Kingdom and Germany (1991), Turkey and Portugal (1993), Poland (1994).

1992 marked the start of FL's partnership with both New Holland and Same Deutz Fahr Group.

In 1997 new branches were born in Scandinavian Countries (FL Nordic) and in Austria (FL Austria).

In 2000 FL opened a new commercial branch in Argentina. FL Selenia got out Fiat Group. In April of the same year the company was acquired by Doughty Hanson & Co., an independent private equity fund management company, in a leveraged by-out transaction.

In December 2000 the company purchased Viscosity oil, an American company, owner of an important transmission oil additive. This allowed FL to become world leader in the manufacturing of oils for the agricultural industry.

In 2003 FL acquired Rondine Azienda Petrolchimica, a lubricants blender and packager.
At the beginning of October 2003 the Company was acquired by Vestar Capital Partners, an American private equity firm.

In 2005 FL acquired Misal Arexons, a leading Company in the production of chemical products for the automotive sector. FL Selenia was acquired by KKR, an American private equity firm .
